Nocturno

While soprano Simona Šaturová, born in the Slovakian capital Bratislava, has previously attracted attention primarily with her opera performances and roles in oratorios and masses, she now presents an album of songs that revolves around the feelings, inspirations and thoughts associated with the evening and night-time hours, which have always fascinated and inspired composers. In the evening and at night, we are exposed to our vulnerability, possibly our loneliness, but also our fears, as we feel more defenceless than in broad daylight. In addition, we hear better at night than during the day, as our sense of sight is impaired by the darkness. Music is therefore the art form of the night par excellence. The night has inspired the performing arts as well as composers, who created serenades, nocturnes and nocturnal opera scenes. Poets had long since discovered the atmosphere of night and evening when composers discovered the power and emotion contained in these texts – and were inspired by these poems for their songs. The Romantics in particular understood how to thematise the night even in instrumental music. The nocturne originated in the open-air music of aristocratic houses in the 18th century, which was mainly an entertaining piece, as this genre designation was primarily about the time of day when the works were performed. It was not until the 19th century that instrumental works also began to capture the mood and passions of the evening and night. But song remained one of the main forms of expression for the feelings of the night … Chronologically speaking, beginning with Mozart’s song ‘Abendempfindung’ KV 523, which was written during the master’s years in Vienna, through the high romanticism of Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann, to the late romanticism at the end of the 19th and beginning of the new century, Simona Šaturová devotes herself to the songs of the night. However, she does not limit herself
